Mar / 10 Millbrook Figure Skating Club Stars on Ice

The MFC had a very busy, challenging, exciting, and successful few days, back on January 29th 30th and 31st.

On the 29th, after weeks and weeks of practice and preparation, the club hosted its annual Stars on Ice Gala. This was an event to which its members proudly displayed their efforts and talents to friends, family and community members.

The kids both big and small never cease to amaze those who watch the show, not with just their talent, but perhaps even more impressive is their courage.

Unlike hockey and other sports, a figure skater, when performing their solo, (as each member did at this event) must place themselves in front of the audience as well as their peers and perform entirely on their own. We take this for granted when we watch skaters who participate at high levels such as the Olympics. However, try if you may, to put yourself in the skates of a 6 year old, who skates to the centre of the ice for the first time, and proceeds to perform an individual skate in front of several people to whom you have never seen in your life before. This is perhaps an Olympian effort in itself, all be it if not in talent, but certainly in courage!

Our kudos go out to the participants, coaches, volunteers, supporters and especially to our local businesses who generously donated gifts to the silent auction.
They are as follows:
Baxter Creek Golf Club, Bear Essentials, Calhoun’s Foodland, Cavan Monaghan Township, Dennis Sage, Kawartha Downs, Millbrook Convenience, Millbrook Pharmacy, Millbrook Pro Hardware, Nexicom, Oasis Tans, Sylvia’s Coffee House, T.J’s Family Restaurant, and Quilts and Critters.

During the next two days, many of the clubs skaters participated in the much-touted Trent Interclub Competition, which was hosted this year in Baltimore Ontario. Virtually all of the kids who represented the MFC put forth outstanding efforts, with many of them taking home medals.
Millbrook competed against clubs who hailed from Trenton, Frankford, Brighton, Picton, Colborne, Cobourg, and Baltimore.
Perhaps the highlight of the weekend was Millbrook’s “Production Number”, choreographed by Coach Melissa Armstrong.
In this event, unlike a solo skate, a group of participants ranging from 8 to 15 skaters, all skate to a song. Costumes and dance moves are used to embrace the theme of the song.
For the second year in a row, the Millbrook Club absolutely owned this event, via a stunning skate to a Michael Jackson Medley. Not only did the Club once again take Gold, but also they enchanted the audience who were thrilled by the Clubs abilities, synchronicity and costumes alike.
Congratulations are extended to all of the MFC’s participants.
As a record of our outstanding achievements, please read on!

Golden “Bookends” for Millbrook Figure Skating Club

Recently, the Millbrook Figure Skating Club participated in the Lindsay Invitational Skating Competition.

As a result, Millbrook’s Hayley Brackenbridge pulled in a Gold Medal performance at one end of the meet, while her co-club member, Ricki-Lee Williams hauled in another Gold Medal at the other end. Neatly tucked in the middle were fellow MFC’s members Taylor Luecke with a Bronze Medal achievement, and a Taylor Sanderson with a solid Fourth Place showing.
Each of the young ladies competed in the “Pre-Preliminary C Freeskate” competition.

Proud Coach Shelly Storace noted that “the girls skated at a level that exceeded most people’s expectations”. “The Lindsay competition is an Invitational skate”. “Therefore it tends to draw skaters from a greater geographical area, and a higher ability level than perhaps some of the other competitions that we have participated in. “Thus the competitive bar was elevated a bit, but the girls rose to the occasion admirably.” “As well, it was the first time for the “Two Taylors” to compete at this level (Pre-Preliminary C Ladies Freeskate) so their finish was exceptional as well”!

Shelly also noted that “our focus at MFC is development via an environment that has “fun” as the foundation”. “That foundation is then built upon by the efforts and abilities of our skaters”. “As we have seen at this competition, there are often very satisfying rewards to this format”. “Once again, I would like to extend my congratulations to each of these fine young skaters”.
